Make no mistake, the United States Navy is growing. Over the past few months, the need for qualified applicants to ultimately fill billets in the Fleet has increased. Navy Recruiting Command will fill the Navy's requirements for 2018, but fiscal year 2019 poses its own increased challenges. To help meet those increased requirements, the Navy needs more Sailors (all enlisted ratings in pay grades E-4 thru E-8 are eligible to apply) spread across the U.S. of A. to recruit the growing need.

To increase the number of recruiters in the field, the Navy is taking a two pronged approach; first, they have increased the number of recruiting billets available for active duty Sailors who are in their window for shore duty orders, and second, the Navy is using the Definite Recall program target the need for Canvasser Recruiters (CANREC). I like to call this, CANREC 2.0.

The CANREC 2.0 Program is a three year temporary recall program for Navy Reservists, including those in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), to accept active duty orders as a bag-toting production recruiter. The opportunities are great and are available across the United States, so it may be likely that billets are available close to where you and your family currently reside, but if a billet does not, you may be able to get selected for one of the limited number of full permanent change of station (PCS) orders that are available. The beauty of one of those sets of orders is that when your three year recall orders are complete, the Navy will PCS you and your family right back home.

Benefits

While serving on active duty, you will be afforded all rights and benefits of full time service. This, of course, includes full active duty pay (a 2.6 percent pay raise, effective Jan. 1st! See the active duty 2019 military pay chart) and allowances (BAH, etc.), Special Duty Assignment Pay (SDAP) at $450 per month (commencing once you have earned NEC 803R), 30 days leave, Tuition Assistance, medical and dental benefits for the entire family, and more.

Additionally, as a Reservist, it includes a year-for-year match on retirement eligibility! For every year served while on CANREC 2.0 recall, it reduces the age at which you would be eligible to start receiving your retirement pay. Think about how much your lifetime earnings increase by receiving your military retirement pension for three additional years. Good stuff, that.

Challenging Duty

Now, before you jump at the opportunity, be mindful of this: being a Navy recruiter can be one of the most rewarding tours you could have while serving this great nation, but it can, and most likely will be, one of the most stressful and demanding, too. The working hours can be long; after all, you would be adjusting your schedule to reflect the time best suited for contacting and meeting up with potential recruits. You will be visiting local schools and businesses, and looking for opportunities to spread the information about Navy opportunities.

The Navy will do a very good job at preparing you for what will confront you; you will attend recruiter school in Pensacola, and receive one on one training once you reach your ultimate assignment, but even with all that, you will be, for the most part, left unsupervised and challenged -- you must be a mission oriented self starter. The Navy will need you to be the very best you can be.

How to Apply for CANREC 2.0

According to PERS-92, enlisted personnel in this program will need to begin the application process by sending an email PERS-92 at [email protected] expressing your interest. You will be sent a Definite Recall Eligibility Pre-screen form to complete and return to PERS-92. If eligible for recall, you will be sent the Enlisted Recruiter Application. If ineligible for recall, you will be sent an email indicating why you were deemed ineligible.
