Military Pay Chart 1963

1963 U.S. Military Basic Pay Charts

Before this year, the last basic pay raise for members of the armed forces became effective on June 1, 1958. The raise for 1963 was 12.6% at a cost of $1.19 billion, but some military members received up to 27.2% by virtue of additional longevity raises that did not exist previously.

During this pay period, more emphasis was placed on tenure as Pay Grades saw additional longevity opportunities added over previous years, including longevity raises for all effected Pay Grades at 20 years of service. The longevity raise at 30 years of service for W-4 has been eliminated.

For fiscal year 1963, on September 7, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law (PL) 87-649 establishing Title 37 of the United States Code, entitled "Pay and Allowances of the Uniformed Services." Title 37 became the guidance for all military pay as of the law's date. The PL also amended Title 10 U.S.C. to restrict the number of E-8 and E-9 with the following text: "Except as provided in section 307 of title 37, the authorized daily average number of enlisted members on active duty (other than for training) in an armed force in pay grades E-8 and E-9 in a calendar year may not be more than 2 percent and 1 percent, respectively, of the number of enlisted members of that armed force who are on active duty (other than for training) on January 1 of that year."

The United States military pay scales below became effective on October 1, 1963 and continued to be in effect until August 31, 1964. It is the basic pay amounts for the active components of the Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard.

The pay rates are monthly, US dollar.
