Why I Am Rooting for the Eagles

Eagles in Super Bowl LII

Updated: February 2, 2018

A Navy related, short story about why I’ll be rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl LII this weekend…

When I was a Navy recruiter in New Jersey back in the mid-1980s, we thought it was a good idea to reopen a Navy recruiting station (NRS) in Camden. It had been closed a few years before due to the high crime rate, but we spent a lot of time there, and having a local office made sense. The district headquarters agreed, and we opened the new NRS on Broadway smack in the middle of downtown.

In an effort to advertise our new location, I called the Eagles and asked if they could somehow support us in that endeavour. The person I talked to told me to put our desires in a letter and mail it in.

Our plan was to have some of the pro football players play a game of basketball against the Camden High football players. I got the idea from when I was attending high school in Crystal River, Florida, when our local Jaycees played a basketball game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in our gym. I had the opportunity to meet the great Doug Williams — it was an exciting thing for me as a huge Bucs fan. Good times.

Anyway, I fired off the letter, but had no real belief that it would come to anything.

I was wrong.

A week or so after I mailed the letter, I received a phone call from the Eagles organization. “How many players do you need?” was the first question out of his mouth after the introduction.

Randall Cunningham, Andre Waters, Martin Booker, and many others lined up to play. We were able to meet and talk with Reggie White, John Spagnola, and even coach Buddy Ryan. The event was a ton of fun and a huge success.

Ever since that event, the Eagles have been my second team.

So, Go Eagles! Unless, of course, when you are playing the Bucs, then, well, you know.
