1958-1962 U.S. Military Basic Pay Charts
On May 20, 1958, Public Law 85-422, an Act "To adjust the method of computing basic pay for officers and enlisted members of the uniformed services, to provide proficiency pay for enlisted members thereof, and for other purposes." was signed into law by President Eisenhower. The law amended the Career Compensation Act of 1949 by adding seven new Pay Grades; the senior enlisted grades of E-8 & E-9, and the officer pay grades of O-9 and O-10, and O-1E through O-3E for those who received a commission, but had already completed at least 4 years as an enlisted member.

Also, the longevity raise at 30 years of service was eliminated for all Pay Grades except, W-4, while completely eliminating Over 24, and adding a longevity raise at 20 years.
Military members received a pay raise of between zero to 13% (8.3% average) depending on their grade and time in service. During this pay period, more emphasis was placed on tenure as Pay Grades saw additional longevity opportunities added over previous years.
The United States military pay scales below became effective on June 1, 1958 and continued to be in effect until September 30, 1963. It is the basic pay amounts for the active components of the Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard.

NOTE 1. Pay Grades O-9, O-10 and Fleet Admiral(O-10) received an additional "Personal Money Allowance" of $41.67, $183.33 and $333.33, respectively. While in Pay Grade O-9, serving as a member of the United Nations, the Personal Money Allowance of $225.00 was authorized. The Chief of Naval Operations pay, $1875.00, regardless of time in service.
E pay scale is Enlisted, W scale is Warrant Officer, O scale is Commissioned Officer.
