Military Education Requirements
May 9th, 2011
With the use of the Department of Defense’s three tiered education evaluation system, the education requirements for joining the military can be very confusing and frustrating. Today, an Associated Press article questioned the DoD’s stance on those who receive a high school diploma via an online course. Before we discuss the article, I provided a brief explanation of each of the three tiers;
Tier I
In a nut shell, for a Tier I classification, a classification/credential that removes any education caps and allows for a service minimum ASVAB qualification score, you must have at least 75 percent of the credits earned towards your high school graduation requirements, per academic year, through classroom based (student-teacher environment), instructor-led learning experience. High schools, Home schools and Adult schools must be evaluated by the service’s educational specialist, and Post-Secondary credits (15 semester hours or 22 quarter hours of college credit) earned must be from an accredited degree granting institution listed in the current or applicable American Council on Education (ACE) Accredited Institutions of Post-secondary Education (AIPE) Directory. College credits earned through on-line internet courses from an accredited AIPE institution are acceptable as long as you are also attending classes via classroom instruction.
Use this link for a much more detailed explanation of Tier I credentials.

Naval Support Activity Mid-South and CNRC
April 27th, 2011
The Naval Support Activity Mid-South, located in Millington, TN is closed to all non-essential personnel today due to the heavy rains and possible flooding. Navy Recruiting Command is located on NSA Mid-South, if you are expecting a waiver response, it will not happen today.
On May 1st of this year, NSA Mid-South will be remembering the storm, and subsequent flooding, that displaced hundreds from their homes and closed many of the base’s functions for weeks. Preparations for this year’s storm could be seen around the base in the form of sandbag barriers in front of entrance ways of many of the base’s buildings. (Read the rest of the article…)

One Day in Six Minutes
April 21st, 2011
Mass Communication Specialist Second Class Mark Logico provides a glimpse into a working day of the Navy in Hawaii in this well done time-lapse video, One Day in Six Minutes, Navy Region Hawaii.
Amazingly, the time-lapse video was not shot with a video camera, it was shot with a digital SLR camera, one frame at a time – wow. (Read the rest of the article…)

Latest Navy Eligibility Changes
April 13th, 2011
A few of the instructional changes that became effective today.
The days of the 15 year old sneaking off to join the military have long since past, and now, age restrictions are becoming more stringent. Because of the restrictions placed on minors being assigned to combatant units, those 17 years of age may enlist into the Delayed Entry Program, but may not leave for boot-camp prior to their 18th birthday, unless their 18th birthday will occur no later than 60 days from date of leaving for boot-camp. This policy change also applies to Future Sailors currently in the Delayed Entry Program as well as all new contracts written on or after today.

Will Federal Prisoners Get Paid?
April 8th, 2011
Today, I posed this question to my local NBC affiliate, WMC-TV Memphis, on their Facebook page; “Will federal prisoners continue to get paid during a government shut down?” They immediately responded and have assured me they contacted the prison system for an answer. We are standing by.
Patience is not one of my strongest virtues, so I decided to also make some calls to find out if those are incarcerated in our federal prisons will either stop all work, or be paid. Wow, I hope Action 5 News ultimately has better luck than I; I called the Bureau of Prison’s Public Information Office, the lady who answered the phone did think the question was interesting – she placed me on hold for about 30 seconds, and then transferred me to the Department of Justice who, without pausing, transferred me to the Office of something…couldn’t make it out before he transferred me – who then transferred me to the Office of Personnel Management and Budget where I encountered an endless loop of press X number…
Is the only way to get paid during a government shutdown to commit a federal crime, and stamp out license plates? (Read the rest of the article…)

Navy Recruiting Command, 40 Years Young
April 6th, 2011
For forty years, Navy Recruiting Command has been seeking the best and brightest America has to offer. In most places in the United States, beyond the various news stories and radio/TV commercials echoing the latest slogans produced over the years, the only “Navy” people see is that of our recruiting force – some of the finest Sailors in the United States Navy.
During the last 40 years, our recruiters have interviewed an estimated 23 million (Read the rest of the article…)

NSA Mid-South Mud Run Challenge
March 27th, 2011
On May 1, 2010, Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tennessee, encountered substantial flooding that closed the base for days – some organizations were not able to get back to quasi normal operations for weeks, but the worst of it was the fact that about 350 people who lived on the base were displaced and more than 100 families lost all of their possessions because base housing met much the same fate as the buildings seen in the aerial picture below.
Within the first three days after the flood, the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society came to the rescue with $150,000 of emergency assistance for those evacuated from their homes.
The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which was founded in 1904, is a private non-profit charitable organization that is sponsored by the Department of the Navy. They operate nearly 250 offices ashore and afloat at Navy and Marine Corps bases throughout the world.
The mission of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is to provide, in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Naval Services of the United States, eligible family members, and survivors when in need; and to receive and manage funds to administer these programs.
On April 9, 2011, the Moral Welfare and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Mid-South Chief Petty Officer’s Association, will be hosting the 2011 Fund Drive for Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society with the Mud Run (Read the rest of the article…)

NAVADMIN 088/11
March 18th, 2011
Another early-out program, but this one does create kind of a softer landing than those of the early 90′s. This program, if widely excepted, will take some of the bite out of very unpopular Perform to Serve program by having those on the bubble decide to use this program instead of waiting and stressing on the PTS results; the Navy’s numbers for those forced-out will reduce, and we will appear kinder and gentler.
A separate NAVADMIN with a similar intent; Policy Update and Expansion of Enlisted Early Transition Program NAVADMIN 142/11
In truth, this may be a great opportunity for some.
