Project Valour-IT 2011

July 1st, 2011

This year, from today to the 14th of July, we must pool our resources and truly help and assist our Wounded Warriors. With Soldier’s Angels Project Valour-IT, there is no better direct contribution to their well-being that you can make beyond handing your resources directly to them. You see, Project Valour-IT is a 100%, absolutely no administrative cost deducted, donation to the cause – that is a rare occurrence, as I’m sure you’ll agree.

Over the years, more than 6000 of our Wounded Warriors have benefited from the donations made to Project Valour-IT, but, sadly, many more than 6000 could have benefited if only there was more money available.

What is Project Valour-IT?

Project Valour-IT helps provide voice-controlled/adaptive laptop computers and other technology to support Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand wounds and other severe injuries. Items supplied include: (Read the rest of the article…)

Forrestal – Kennedy

June 21st, 2011

A Merchant Mariner, Elliott Kolner, had just recently finished 30 days aboard the SS Regulus, which is moored one pier over from Forrestal and ex-USS John F. Kennedy, when he snapped this picture.

The former USS Forrestal and USS John F. Kennedy await their fates in Philadelphia shipyard.

Both the Forrestal and the Kennedy are awaiting their next set of orders – Forrestal is set to be sunk as an artificial reef – the Kennedy is on hold, as the Forrestal once was, to become a floating museum.

The Forrestal was decommissioned all the way back in (Read the rest of the article…)

Military Austerity Suggestions

June 6th, 2011

Department of Defense (DoD) Secretary Robert Gates (SECDEF) recently delivered a policy speech in which he suggested that politicians must do something to fix the military compensation system in order to make it more efficient or DoD will not be able to meet its obligations in the coming years. With a strong call to reduce the national debt, which is nearly $15 trillion, the DoD budget will most certainly be less and less in the coming years. Change is coming.

I think there are modifications we can make in the areas of pay, retirement and education, some painful, (Read the rest of the article…)

Site Updated, Page by Page

June 4th, 2011

As new Navy or Department of Defense instructions are written or old ones are updated, I spend time updated the affected pages on Navy Cyberspace to ensure it stays current.

On May 17, 2011, Navy Recruiting Command released a new version of the Navy Recruiting Manual; today, I completed the painstaking page by page update.

Where there was a bunch of small changes, there is nothing Earth-shattering to report. (Read the rest of the article…)

Afghan Military Enlistment

May 19th, 2011

During the 2011 Milblog conference, I had the privilege of asking Lt. Gen Caldwell, the Commander of NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan, a few questions about the recruitment of members into the Afghan National Army (ANA). In response, the General described the contributions of the United States Army recruiting personnel who were brought over to Afghanistan to assist in the formation and implementation of Afghan National Army Recruiting Command (ANAREC). During the round table, he also offered up the services of his speechwriter, Major Good. I took advantage by asking a few follow up questions that specifically addressed the requirements one must meet in order to join the ANA.

Not surprisingly, the requirements for joining the Afghan military are really not all that different from that of the United States military. The Afghan National Army has a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) where a basic literacy test is administered (we utilize the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)). The MEPS also has doctors and a medical staff that perform physicals, provided required immunizations and even make a determination whether the recruit is actually the age his or her documents indicate. There is an oath of enlistment, but it is taken during the second week of training with their kandak (battalion).

The Afghan National Army Oath (Female Officer Example): (Read the rest of the article…)

Military Education Requirements

May 9th, 2011

With the use of the Department of Defense’s three tiered education evaluation system, the education requirements for joining the military can be very confusing and frustrating. Today, an Associated Press article questioned the DoD’s stance on those who receive a high school diploma via an online course. Before we discuss the article, I provided a brief explanation of each of the three tiers;

Tier I

In a nut shell, for a Tier I classification, a classification/credential that removes any education caps and allows for a service minimum ASVAB qualification score, you must have at least 75 percent of the credits earned towards your high school graduation requirements, per academic year, through classroom based (student-teacher environment), instructor-led learning experience. High schools, Home schools and Adult schools must be evaluated by the service’s educational specialist, and Post-Secondary credits (15 semester hours or 22 quarter hours of college credit) earned must be from an accredited degree granting institution listed in the current or applicable American Council on Education (ACE) Accredited Institutions of Post-secondary Education (AIPE) Directory. College credits earned through on-line internet courses from an accredited AIPE institution are acceptable as long as you are also attending classes via classroom instruction.

Use this link for a much more detailed explanation of Tier I credentials.

Tier II

Naval Support Activity Mid-South and CNRC

April 27th, 2011

The Naval Support Activity Mid-South, located in Millington, TN is closed to all non-essential personnel today due to the heavy rains and possible flooding. Navy Recruiting Command is located on NSA Mid-South, if you are expecting a waiver response, it will not happen today.

On May 1st of this year, NSA Mid-South will be remembering the storm, and subsequent flooding, that displaced hundreds from their homes and closed many of the base’s functions for weeks. Preparations for this year’s storm could be seen around the base in the form of sandbag barriers in front of entrance ways of many of the base’s buildings. (Read the rest of the article…)
