Hybrid Crews in the Gator Navy
December 9th, 2010
This week I had the privilege of participating on a conference call set-up by DOD-Live. The guest was Rear Adm. Kevin Scott, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two (ESG 2).
Our conversation;
Sir, on November 22, the Navy Times’ Sam Fellman wrote an article about the potential for civilians to be added to ships’ company in the Gator Navy, much like that in our current Military Sealift Command assigned ships. Are there any specific measurements that you’re going to be taking during Bold Gator 2011 that will show or demonstrate the potential issues that we might be arising with the hybrid crews in that format? And secondly, sir, do you know if any ship has been identified to be able to complete the evaluation stage that was discussed?

NAVADMIN 346/10
October 20th, 2010
The Navy’s current, official guidance concerning homosexuals serving on active duty and the Reserve. As the NAVADMIN states, current military laws, regulations and policies are being reviewed to, for lack of a better word, adapt said laws, regulations and policies for the gay Servicemember.
A note I would like to highlight from the message; “WE NOTE FOR SERVICEMEMBERS THAT ALTERING THEIR PERSONAL CONDUCT IN THIS LEGALLY UNCERTAIN ENVIRONMENT MAY HAVE ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES FOR THEMSELVES OR OTHERS SHOULD THE COURT’S DECISION BE REVERSED.”
UPDATE: According to Reuters, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily reinstated the of ban on gays in the military.
UPDATE: NAVADMIN 347/10 “UPDATED GUIDANCE ON DON’T ASK DON’T TELL FOLLOWING COURT OF APPEALS RULING” is posted in the comments of this article.
UPDATE: On Nov. 1, 2010, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit voted 2-1 to extend the stay (throughout the appeal process) on the lower judge’s ruling that put an immediate suspension on the law. NAVADMIN 362/10, copy of which is in this posts comments, provides additional guidance for the Navy.
From the 20th edition of the Bluejacket’s Manual (US Naval Institute: 1984 printing),
“There are a lot of mistaken ideas about homosexuality. Some examples: a homosexual can be detected by speech characteristics, manner or dress. (This is not true in most cases.) VD cannot be contracted through homosexual acts. (It can, and frequently is.) The Navy will “cure” homosexuals. (The Navy does not have the facilities or personnel for this; and even if it did, treatment is not always successful.)“
Times are a changin.

The FID Made it to Philly
June 19th, 2010

USS FORRESTAL (CV-59)
Thursday, I received an email from a friend of mine with whom I attended ET school, many years ago. After school we both went to different commands, he to the USS Impervious (MSO-449), and I to the FID – both of which were ported at Mayport. When I arrived shortly after C school, I had 8 days until we were to deploy to the Med. During that short time, we toured each other’s vessels, and remembered the good times we had up in Glakes.
Anyway, his email told me that his daughter, who is in the Coast Guard, escorted my old ship, the USS Forrestal, from Rhode Island to Philadelphia. It is great to hear from him. Small world.
Update! He was kind enough to forward a couple of pictures taken from the United States Coast Guard Cutter Mako (WPB 87303) as they escorted the Forrestal to Philly. The CGC Mako, an 87′ coastal patrol boat, is homeported at Cape May, New Jersey.

Pin-Up Model Contest
May 9th, 2010
First of all, Mom, I love you, and “Happy Mother’s Day!” to you and all you other moms out there.
I recently bought a new camera. I am not a photographer, I have zero understanding of proper lighting, ISO (whatever the heck that is), or even, the best angles to use. The Memphis Zoo has started a photo contest to help create their 2011 Zoo Calendar. I thought, heck, I can focus, point and shoot – maybe I’ll get lucky. Here are entries into three of the 12 categories – I’ll have to return to establish the other nine as the point and shoot didn’t go so well… Anyway, how do these look?

Women to Enter the Silent Service
April 29th, 2010
Submarine service opens to female Naval officers. No word yet on when the opportunity will open for the female enlisted Sailor. I am of the opinion that it is the right thing – all opportunities should be open to all programs for those who can meet the requirements. We have the intelligence and technology to manage the berthing situation.

Over Four Decades
April 25th, 2010
This week marks a pause in my family’s service in the United Sates Navy as my son, Kevin, has finished his time and returned to the states from Japan. Until a future generation continues the tradition, we so far have had four generations that amassed 44 years of proud, honorable service to the Navy. (Read the rest of the article…)
