First off, thank you to the Ohio State fans who showed an enormous amount of class before, during, and after the game. It was an entertaining and exciting football game to watch. You Buckeyes displayed your pride in our country and armed forces with a grace not seen enough in this day and age. BZ!

Good to see Vice Admiral Fowler on the sidelines wearing a huge smile just after the 85 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for Navy. I, like him, thought the Midshipmen would pull off the upset!!

Navy may have lost the football game, but proved they can compete with the big schools. If Ohio State really is a Top 10 team this year, then Navy proved it should easily be in the Top 25.

It was a Saturday night, 23 April 1983, Luther and I stationed aboard the USS Forrestal and both made the trek from Mayport, FL to the Philadelphia shipyard for the FIDs service life extension program (SLEP) decided to head out and explore the South Jersey. Our ship had not been in the area but a few weeks and we were all still getting our bearings.

As we navigated one of the local road ways it became quite apparent that I was not going to be able to continue without a pit stop. My bladder felt as if it was going to burst. Luckily relief came into view.

The Silver Saddle Saloon, which we found out, was a bar – upstairs was all country and the basement was all rock and roll. It was the only obvious immediate stop along the roadway.

We pulled into the gravel parking lot and found a spot to park near the back of the property, still in view of the entrance. I quickly got out of the car and made a move to relieve myself at the edge of wooded area of the parking lot until I heard a yell, “HEY!” I turned and saw the bouncer for the club standing at the door and signaling for me to come over. Luther was still in the car, we did not plan on staying.

I approached the club’s bouncer and he asked what I was doing in his parking lot. As I danced in front of him I explained I had to use a bathroom in a bad way. He said they had one inside I could use and using his parking lot was not acceptable. I started to enter the building when he put his hand up to stop me – “What?!, I have got to go!”, I pleaded. He responded, “$5 cover charge.” GAHHHH!

The head was located at the opposite end of the building, just past the dance floor. As I made my way to it I saw a very beautiful woman standing at the bar. I couldn’t stop – I had to go.

Relief.

I started to make my way back to the door, Luther was still waiting in the car, I turned to the bar to see if she was still there. she was. We made eye contact. I stopped, turned and quickly approached her.

Bonnie was wearing a cowboy hat, jeans and one of those leather vests with the thin leather tassels – she was dressed very westernly…

I walked up to her, introduced myself and asked if she knew how to dance to the country music they had playing (I had never seen anyone two step before – heck, this was the first time I had ever been in a C&W bar). She said she did.

May 28, 1983

I grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the dance floor saying, “Good, you’re going to teach me”.

I don’t know how much time passed before I asked, “What are you doing tomorrow?” she said, “I’m going out with you”. I got her phone number and left.

Luther and I later that night stopped at Denny’s for a late night meal. I told him about Bonnie and told him right then, “I am going to marry that girl”, he thought I was nuts.

On May 28, 1983 – 26 years ago today and 5 weeks to the day after I had met her, we were married. Believe in love at first sight? I do.

I receive emails as a result of my attendance to the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class from the Fleet and Family Support Center Mid-South updating me on some of the various opportunities. The notice I got today is worth driving a long distance to attend!

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will be presenting “Marketing Yourself for a Second Career” on May 12, 2009. A free two and one half hour professional lecture for officers and senior enlisted who plan to leave the service in the next one to five years. Spouses are cordially invited.

During the presentation you will learn about your competition for finding a job, perceptions civilian employers have of military personnel, developing a plan for your job search, resumes, cover letters, broadcast letters, etc. Learn how employers read your resume. Understand networking and penetrating the hidden job market and preparing for and conducting a successful interview. Gain a valuable understanding of salary negotiations, benefit packages and even how to deal with rejection.

To clarify re: books mentioned in the quoted email below, participants
will complete a contact card and books will be mailed directly to them.

We have a wonderful once-a-year event coming up, and we’re asking for your help to get the word out. The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA, formerly TROA) will be presenting its superb “Marketing Yourself for a Second Career” lecture on 12 May, at 8:00 a.m., in the Helmsman Complex Ballroom.

This top-shelf presentation is very beneficial for all those who may be contemplating retirement or separation within three years. It will be given by a retired colonel, now deputy director on MOAA’s national staff. The lecture is universally praised by audiences as, “up-to-date, hard-hitting, and sharply focused- a must see “, it is presented annually at over 150 military installations of all Services worldwide.

The lecture includes comprehensive information on resumes, cover letters, job search, networking, career fairs, interview techniques, salary negotiation, benefits packages, the current job market, and other relevant and important transition topics.

The presentation is geared toward officers, but those of all ranks, as well as spouses are warmly welcomed. All who attend will receive a free copy of the lecture’s companion book, also titled “Marketing Yourself for a Second Career” an in-depth, all-in-one resource for the transition process.

The presentation complements our installation transition program. As transition ultimately becomes a part of every military member’s career, please use this as a “professional development” opportunity for your people – especially your officers and senior enlisted. We strongly encourage you to attend along with them!

The latest NavyCS Industrial average (NIA) is 3035.35, a 36.9% gain since the starting date of March 9, 2009.

The NIA because we, Bonnie and I, think each one of us should have a plan for distributing a portion of our funds to charities. Remember, a downturn in the economy does not equal a downturn in the need for charities support!

Before the opening bell this morning I have about 30% of the NIA in cash waiting on another pull back in the market. The current stocks include; BP Inc (BP:NYSE), General Electric (GE:NYSE), Synovus Financial Corp (SNV:NYSE) and Intel Corp (INTC:NASDAQ).

Some great news concerning Soldier’s Angels – they are now a part of CFC!

Soldiers’ Angels is now part of the Combined Federal Campaign Fund

Thanksgiving Day will be each year’s payout date. No matter which way the stocks go we pledge a minimum of $100 or 10% of the NIA cash gain (to include dividends), which ever is greater, in the name of the Navy Blogosphere.
