No Timeline Set for the Enlisted Female Integration

May 12th, 2010

Yesterday, I participated in my first DODLive Blogger’s Roundtable. The event featured Rear Adm. Bruner, Commander Submarine Group Ten. I am sure he would have answered any questions concerning the current state of the submarine force, but the main topic on everyone’s mind was the female Sailor integration into submarine service.

The question I was going to lead off with concerned the enlisted female integration plan. I was to go first, and the Admiral, inadvertently, had me adjust my questioning on the fly when he stated in his opening comments;

“While the Navy envisions integrating female officers, we’ll continue planning to integrate enlisted women in submarines. However, right now we don’t have a time or a set timeline to integrate enlisted females.”

Here it is; [the] Navy’s stance as to why women have not been assigned to submarines up to this point has (Read the rest of the article…)

Women to Enter the Silent Service

April 29th, 2010

Submarine service opens to female Naval officers. No word yet on when the opportunity will open for the female enlisted Sailor. I am of the opinion that it is the right thing – all opportunities should be open to all programs for those who can meet the requirements. We have the intelligence and technology to manage the berthing situation.

NAVADMIN 152/10 marks the historic occasion; the NAVADMIN in its entirety; (Read the rest of the article…)

A Future Sailor’s Weight Loss Journey

April 19th, 2010

As per written instruction, your Recruiter is discouraged from promoting specific diet plans. The Navy wants to reduce the possibility of the Navy becoming liable for any ill effects various diet plans may cause. You should seek advice of qualified health care professionals before starting any diet plan. I certainly am not qualified to endorse any weight loss method; however, I think, since my retirement, I am now qualified to tell you how to gain weight, but that is for another time.

I have been following (Read the rest of the article…)

Pulse Rate and Blood Pressure

April 16th, 2010

Not sure what is causing the sudden rise in questions concerning hypertension and what blood pressure readings would be considered disqualifying during the physical at MEPS, but I think it is time to make a post about it. So, I pulled out the latest MEPCOM regulation to verify nothing has changed over the past couple of years and pieced together the following information to help those who may have concerns.

I have not been asked about pulse rate, but I decided to add the information because I do recall losing a few applicants over the years for tachycardia (heart beats too fast). The MEPS medical folks, during your physical, will hook you up to an automatic blood pressure and pulse rate machine. If on the first try everything is normal, then you move on to the other parts of the physical with no worries about blood pressure or pulse issues. If you do have a pulse reading out of standards, (Read the rest of the article…)

A Day at the Memphis Zoo

February 27th, 2010

Today, the wife and I went to the Memphis Zoo, of which we are members, and we snapped nearly a hundred photos of the current residents. I am only going to bore you with a few of my favorites in this post.

First off, the pride of the Memphis Zoo. Only a handful of zoos around the country are able to afford the costs of “rental” and up-keep of these beautiful animals, we are very lucky that Memphis Zoo is one of them.

Memphis Panda

Now, I wanna side track you a second before I show you more of the animals. Right outside of the Panda exhibit, there is this Chinese symbol embedded into the ground (Read the rest of the article…)

No Waivers for Domestic Violence Convictions

February 21st, 2010

If you are considering enlistment in the Navy, and you have questionable conduct in your past that includes a charge of domestic violence – this post may answer a few of your questions.

Domestic Violence is incompatible with military service and contrary to the Navy’s core values. If you have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you are ineligible for enlistment; however, there are exceptions to the rule, which are discussed below.

If you have a conviction for domestic violence, as defined in Title 18 U.S. Code Sections 921 and 922 as discussed below, you are ineligible for all military service – not just the Navy. Domestic violence offenses may also include, but are not limited to, assault, assault and battery, and disorderly conduct convictions in which the perpetrator and victim meet the conditions of the domestic violence rule. The domestic violence rule must be applied regardless of whether or not you were charged with domestic violence.

Rule: The crime of domestic violence means any crime which includes the attempt or use of physical force or the threat of use of a deadly weapon, where you (the perpetrator) are the: (Read the rest of the article…)

New Minimum Weight Standard

January 22nd, 2010

The Navy has now decided to use the Body Mass Index (BMI) as a method of determining the minimum weight for an applicant who is joining. Prior to this change, a person would have to meet or exceed a minimum static number for their height. I have updated the height weight chart to reflect the current change and also provided a link to the BMI calculator that the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) will use.
