NSA Mid-South Mud Run Challenge
March 27th, 2011
On May 1, 2010, Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tennessee, encountered substantial flooding that closed the base for days – some organizations were not able to get back to quasi normal operations for weeks, but the worst of it was the fact that about 350 people who lived on the base were displaced and more than 100 families lost all of their possessions because base housing met much the same fate as the buildings seen in the aerial picture below.
Within the first three days after the flood, the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society came to the rescue with $150,000 of emergency assistance for those evacuated from their homes.
The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which was founded in 1904, is a private non-profit charitable organization that is sponsored by the Department of the Navy. They operate nearly 250 offices ashore and afloat at Navy and Marine Corps bases throughout the world.
The mission of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is to provide, in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Naval Services of the United States, eligible family members, and survivors when in need; and to receive and manage funds to administer these programs.
On April 9, 2011, the Moral Welfare and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Mid-South Chief Petty Officer’s Association, will be hosting the 2011 Fund Drive for Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society with the Mud Run Challenge Memphis/Millington, TN.
If you cannot come to Millington and actually participate in the event, I understand, but you can still help by going to their official site and providing a monetary donation!
Pass the word, and Thank You!
