No Hybrid Eval Planned During Bold Gator 2011

Hybrid Crews in the Gator Navy

December 9th, 2010

This week I had the privilege of participating on a conference call set-up by DOD-Live. The guest was Rear Adm. Kevin Scott, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two (ESG 2).

Our conversation;

Sir, on November 22, the Navy Times’ Sam Fellman wrote an article about the potential for civilians to be added to ships’ company in the Gator Navy, much like that in our current Military Sealift Command assigned ships. Are there any specific measurements that you’re going to be taking during Bold Gator 2011 that will show or demonstrate the potential issues that we might be arising with the hybrid crews in that format? And secondly, sir, do you know if any ship has been identified to be able to complete the evaluation stage that was discussed?

Rear Adm. Scott;

Tom, no, right now Bold Alligator is basically come-as-you-are party in terms of where we are currently with our forces. You know, we’re not incorporating any future initiatives or any other types of future platforms. We’re really focusing on the command and control at the operational type of level. In regards to any ships being identified for this — (inaudible) — initiative, I’m working alongside fleet forces to determine which would be the best ship to apply this program to as a test bed. We have not made that decision as of yet.

My follow-up later in the conversation;

You said you were working to figure out which ship you want to use in the evaluation part of the testing for the hybrid crews. Is there a deadline on that, sir?

Rear Adm. Scott;

No, I’m not sure. One, again, I just talked to some representatives of fleet forces last week and I’m waiting to sit down with them and work this through. I don’t think as right now that we’ve set a timeline as we go ahead with this. But there’s definitely more to follow.

Bold Gator 2011 is the most significant and robust exercise within the USN-USMC amphibious community in almost 10 years. Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two (ESG 2), and Commander, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (2nd MEB) in coordination with ships assigned to the U.S. Second Fleet will conduct a joint large-scale fleet synthetic training amphibious exercise, which will concentrate on the fundamental roles as “fighters from the sea.” Its focus is based on the joint goal of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and the Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC) to revitalize and return to the fundamental amphibious roles as “fighters from the sea”.

The exercise will focus improve amphibious force readiness and proficiency for executing the six core capabilities of the Maritime Strategy – forward presence, deterrence, sea control, power projection, maritime security and humanitarian assistance/disaster response.
