Preparing for the ASVAB

December 28th, 2010

The Armed Force’s Qualification Test (AFQT) is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, better known as the ASVAB, it is the only test used by the United States military to determine one’s eligibility for enlistment. Each service has a minimum AFQT score, or “QT score” required for enlistment; as a matter of fact, enlistment eligibility is the only real function the AFQT, it is not used to determine what rating or job for which you may qualify.

The ASVAB is comprised of nine separate sections. Each section is timed, and they vary in topics from Arithmetic Reasoning to Word Knowledge. Each section’s score is (Read the rest of the article…)

DADT Repeal Passed in Senate

December 18th, 2010

The Senate passed the bill today that will overturn the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. The president’s signature that will make the bill law is expected before Christmas.

The following is a statement by the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Roughead;

Special from Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs Office
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NNS) — The Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Gary Roughead, released the following statement following the vote to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”:
I am pleased the Congress voted to repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” statute (section 654 of title 10, United States Code).

This Senate action does not immediately change the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.

If the President signs the provision into law, there are still a series of steps that will take place before Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is repealed.

First, the Department of Defense will prepare the necessary policies and regulations to implement the change. We will also ensure that the force is provided training on the new policies.

Second, the President, Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff must certify that the change can be made consistent with military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion, and recruiting and retention.

Finally, there is a 60-day period following certification before repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell takes effect.

As we move forward our Navy’s superb leaders, both officer and enlisted, will be key to a successful transition to the new policy. Navy leadership will continue to keep all informed.
The United States Navy will remain the world’s most ready, capable and professional Navy where all our shipmates will continue to be treated with dignity and respect.

Hybrid Crews in the Gator Navy

December 9th, 2010

This week I had the privilege of participating on a conference call set-up by DOD-Live. The guest was Rear Adm. Kevin Scott, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two (ESG 2).

Our conversation;

Sir, on November 22, the Navy Times’ Sam Fellman wrote an article about the potential for civilians to be added to ships’ company in the Gator Navy, much like that in our current Military Sealift Command assigned ships. Are there any specific measurements that you’re going to be taking during Bold Gator 2011 that will show or demonstrate the potential issues that we might be arising with the hybrid crews in that format? And secondly, sir, do you know if any ship has been identified to be able to complete the evaluation stage that was discussed?
