GI-Bill Provides Opportunity

Four Years After The Navy

July 28th, 2010

I received an email from my oldest son, Tommy, today. He mentioned that today has marked four years post Navy for him. I wanted to share a portion of the email to demonstrate what the GI-Bill combined with lessons learned in the Navy could do.

Tommy is currently completing an internship with Senator Alexander (R-TN) in Washington D.C., and will be starting his second year of law school at Penn State.

A portion of the email;

So, today I got to sit at a senator’s desk on the senate floor for about an hour as Senator Alexander gave a speech. It was amazing and inspiring (both the opportunity and the speech). The Senate wasn’t in session obviously, but it was still awesome. Then it occurred to me; today is the 4 year anniversary of my discharge from the Navy. Only 4 years! Looking back at all I’ve done and accomplished during that time is really mind blowing (to me at least). Graduating college in three years, summa cum laude, with honors, top of my class, numerous honor societies, several awards, internship with Tennessee State Legislature, Internship with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, law school, law review, internship with U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, etc., etc., etc.. I mean, if someone told me 4 years ago that I would be sitting behind a shiny wooden desk, in the royal blue senate chamber, at our nation’s Capitol, I would have thought that they were certifiably crazy. It makes me wonder what I can accomplish in the next four years to come.

I know, with his work ethic and persistence, he will be at least as successful in the next four years as the previous. I am so proud of him.

BZ, Tommy!

    That is terrific. Congrats to you as a parent. Sounds like an absolutely great young man. Kudo’s to him.

  4. Greg says:

    Great, now he needs to get out in the real world. Learning requires exposing oneself to new things and government is not the way to learn. Get out of that office and run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    What is the intent here? Did this kid REALLY write this letter or did Dad polish it up a bit? I think the entire family probably suffers tennis-elbow from patting THEMSELVES on the back!! Get a REAL job sonny!!

    Retired Naval Officer,

    My son completed 6 years in the Navy and is now pursuing his Juris Doctorate in hopes of becoming a lawyer. Completing internships during the pursuit of the degree is a necessary part of the education.

    The intent is to show that you can enlist in the Navy and go on to other endeavors, perhaps even more successfully because you served.

    Sorry I am late to this. Congrats, Chief, to you and your son. It’s obvious he learned some things from you, and it’s also obvious he paid attention during his years on active duty.

    To the Retired naval Officer…. with all due respect, sir, these ARE the types of young men that our Navy can produce. I know this good Master Chief, and I have no doubt his son needs any help from his dad…. not that he would admit it :)

    best wishes to your son for a long, prosperous and honorable career.
