Snowing in Memphis

February 28th, 2009

OK, I moved away from Boston almost 6 years ago – great city. Being a Floridian the one thing I didn’t miss about the northeast was the snow.

For the 6 years we have lived in the Memphis area we have come to expect about an inch of the white stuff every year, seems we are getting about 4 years worth in one day today.

Somebody tell me again why global warming is a bad thing… (Read the rest of the article…)

Memphis Style BBQ Pork Ribs

Raw Ribs w/Dry Rub

Raw Ribs w/Dry Rub

The weather was great, so I took advantage of it by firing up the grill to prepare for the BBQ season. I mean spring is just around the corner, and to live in the Memphis area, you should be able to cook up some ribs; it’s almost a requirement for home ownership.

The base Commissary had a case sale on ribs, so my freezer has enough to get us at least to June. That is a lot of ribs, but when you cook out in this neighborhood you need to expect someone to stop by for a “sample”, so it is always a good idea to be prepared in both quality and quantity. Budget Proposal Would Fix Concurrent Receipt

February 26th, 2009

This year looks more promising; 2011 Chapter 61 concurrent receipt discussion

Reading further in the defense section of the 2010 budget outline it looks as if the issues with concurrent receipt of retired military pay and VA disability pay will finally be fixed!

The Budget also contains a proposal to expand concurrent receipt of military retired pay and Veterans Disability Compensation to all retirees receiving disability retired pay. Under current law, the prohibition on concurrent receipt means that these benefits offset each other so that disabled military retirees cannot receive full DOD retirement and Veterans disability payments. When the offset is removed, disabled military retirees would receive additional monthly compensation.

Navy Right Spirit Is Effective

February 25th, 2009

Since 1980, the year I went to boot camp, our military has seen a dramatic reduction of deaths as a result of an accident. The 2007 American War and Military Operations Casualties report provides the actual statistics.

The reductions in death from accidents and accidents in general, I think, can be directly attributed to two policies. First, the drug testing program and the earlier move from forgiveness (Read the rest of the article…)

911 GI-Bill Transferability

February 24th, 2009

Questions on the details still remain. Is there an age limit for the child you can transfer too? What if your child has also served in the military and has his/her own GI-Bill benefit? Is there any relief for the individuals who fully meet the requirements of the 911 GI-Bill who completed their obligated service and only had the MGIB and are left with student loans? ASVAB Confirmation Test

February 20th, 2009

For some time now I have been getting email questions regarding the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), specifically about the confirmation test and what is it about. I answered each question confidentially and tailored the answer to the individual, I will continue to do that, but those questions prompted me to put the regulation into, hopefully, an understandable way. So here it goes! (Remember, the AFQT score is what is used to indicate your aptitude for service; it is not, by itself, the score used to determine what Navy job you may qualify for – that is what the ASVAB line scores are used for.)

Confirmation testing applies (Read the rest of the article…)

Military Leave Resources

February 18th, 2009

Military leave is your vacation time, you accumulate 2.5 days a month (30 days a year). Liberty is time off from work, it can be as long as 4 days and does not count against your leave balance. In the military you get time off and it is more than most employed civilians get. Each branch of the armed forces wants you to utilize the time off to unwind and relax and they have set up organizations to assist you to do just that.

One problem is that our Service members (active, reserve and even retired) rarely know what all their resources are. Nothing worse than (Read the rest of the article…)
