Pressure Cooker Pork Chops – Tomatoes
January 29th, 2009

Easy Pork Chop Meal
As I mentioned previously I like cooking with a pressure cooker. There are many other ways to cook a pork chop but they tend to leave the meat dry and tough. Cooking them under pressure keeps the natural juices in the chop and even infuses some of the other liquids during the process.
Today, for the first time, I decided to experiment with another one of my favorite ingredients, the tomato.
The idea hit me when I opened the pantry and had a 28oz can of whole peeled tomatoes staring me in the face. So, besides the pork chops (Read the rest of the article…)

2010 Defense Budget Slowed
January 26th, 2009
According to the press release the 2010 defense budget will be delayed because “the new administration will need more time for a substantial review of the submission“. I think they should be following the same due diligence for the recovery bill.
UPDATE: President Obama has released a budget online today, 26 Feb, that indicates a military pay raise of 2.9%
My educated guess was accurate! Here is the 2010 military pay raise proposal by President Obama of 2.9%.
As also reported the nitty, griddy details of the budget will not be released until the spring. My main worry at this point is a delay in the beginning of this budget process could lead to delays in final approval which equals pay delays in the first months of 2010 (remember 2008?), that is never a good thing. 2009 Recovery Bill
January 25th, 2009
I read most of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the bill making its way through congress which is supposed to stimulate the economy in such a way that we will avert certain doom. If this document is our saving grace I suggest you start limbering up so you can reach your head around and kiss your own ass good-bye – you won’t be able to afford to pay someone else to do it.
Reading the draft I quickly came to the realization that most everything costs about $300 million – it seems to be an arbitrary amount thrown at just about everything. Another eye catcher (Read the rest of the article…)

Navy Dependent Definition
January 24th, 2009
I get a lot of questions via email about the definition of a “dependent” for Navy Recruiting determination of an applicants qualification for service. The below information is taken from the recruiting manual. Keep in mind the definition does not apply to entitlement of military pay and allowances, medical care, exchange and commissary privileges, or other benefits. Such determinations are made only after enlistment or affiliation and your Recruiter shall not render opinions on future entitlements. A dependent for enlistment and affiliation purposes is defined as any of the following: (Read the rest of the article…)

Navy Nurse Uniform Anniversary

Navy Nurse Uniform authorized Jan 22, 1923
Well, of sorts. The white indoor duty uniform, authorized from 22 January 1923, has been modified quite a few times over the last 86 years. I think the only thing it may have in common with today’s uniform is the color.
One other important fact about 1923 was the beginning of a uniform allowance for Navy Nurses, six long years after the female Yeomen! Military pay and allowances were very different then than today.
The first uniform regulation (Read the rest of the article…)

Discovery Network and the Navy
January 14th, 2009
A NAVADMIN was released today which describes a number of projects to produce documentaries for the Discovery network which includes the Discovery Channel, Military and Science Channels.
Some specifics from the NAVADMIN are Discovery will produce an episode of their technology based show called “Prototype This”, that will focus on the littoral combat ship. I would assume filming of this segment would take place aboard the USS Freedom (LCS-1), it is the first ship of the Littoral Combat Ship class and was commissioned on November 8, 2008 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (day before my Wife’s Birthday!). Also among the projects (Read the rest of the article…)

If the Ravens beat the Steelers this coming Sunday at Pittsburgh we could be experiencing the first ever “Bird Bowl”. Cardinals and Eagles will be fighting it out to see who makes it from the NFC.

Hard EAOS and SRB
January 9th, 2009
NAVADMIN 006/09 was released today placing a re-enlistment requirement of 90 days from the end of your obligated service (EAOS) for getting your selective reenlistment bonus (SRB). At least one of the exceptions is Sailors who are eligible for combat zone tax exclusion (CZTE) or serving in a qualified hazardous duty area (HDA) and have a hard EAOS that falls in the most current fiscal year are not subject to the 90-day rolling window of eligibility and are authorized to reenlist anytime within the fiscal year. These Sailors, along with command career counselors must annotate in the remarks section of the pre-certification request whether they are currently CZTE eligible or serving in a qualified HDA. A condition of approval of this pre-certification request is that the Sailor’s reenlistment occurs in a month during which CZTE or HDA qualification applies. Here is the NAVADMIN in its entirety; (Read the rest of the article…)
