Time to Take a Hop!

Space A Adventure

September 9th, 2008

My wife and I have decided to embark on a “no idea where we’ll end up” vacation. As you may be aware, one of the benefits of serving in the United States Armed Forces is being able to fly on military and military chartered aircraft that have empty seats.

Flying “Space A” or “space available” is the method Bonnie and I used only once before back in 1994. Our desire was to get to Germany, rent a car and drive the Autobon. Everything went surprisingly smooth, from what I have read I think luck was on our side. To make a long story really short, we flew from Atlanta MAC terminal to London on a charter flight. Two days later caught a C-5 down to Frankfort – rented a Beamer and drove the Autobon, cool vacation! We were lucky enough to catch a Space A return flight to Atlanta. Got back before my 2 weeks leave was over! Round trip airline cost? $24 each (it paid for the meals).

Our next trip is planned for the beginning of Spring 2009, the trip will last until we can get a “military hop” back to our car. Today a friend of mine sent me a link to an excellent information source for Space A travel – Dirk Pepperd’s Space A message board. I spent hours reading the various posts today – my favorite section is the Space A trip reports. One story told is about an adventure to Thailand from Memphis! We can’t wait!

Have a great trip and don’t forget about two other great space-a websites: http://www.takeahop.com and http://www.spacea.net.
