Stressful Stress Free HolidayLabor Day 2008August 31st, 2008According to the Department of Labor (DOL), Labor Day is a yearly national tribute to the contributions of workers whom continue to bring prosperity and strength to our great nation. Labor Day started as a celebration back in the mid 1880s with street parades showing the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. Labor Day for me, I am sorry to say, has never been a celebration as described by the DOL – for me it has always been a long weekend for spending quality time with the family, having one last “summer” BBQ and ensuring my fantasy football line up is set. This holiday is one of the very few “Stress Free holidays”, think about it, there isn’t an expectation for you to send a card, buy flowers, utilize the family phone tree, really, does anyone do that for Labor Day? This is a holiday without expectations! It truly is a DAY OFF…normally. Labor Day 2008 may mark another day of sadness and devastation for those living on America’s gulf coast and let us not forget this Labor Day we have men and women serving our great country overseas. I am not trying to throw a guilt trip on ya, but I am asking you to take a few minutes and remember the dedication of the members of our military and please say a little prayer for all in harms way.
