Bob,

Your recruiter is the one that has to get any court documents - by instruction, he cannot except for processing any police or court documents that you bring him. (medical documents are ok, but police/court records are not)

Currently, because of the service's retention, and the number of people who are attempting to join without prior issues, it is an uphill battle to join the service with a prior adversely adjudicated alcohol or drug related charge, like DUI, possession of MJ, etc.

my question: i had a dui 13 yrs ago and i am trying to enlist in the navy. im working on getting all of the court papers together and to my recruiter, but i was told that a dui will lead to an uphill battle for me. could someone please shine light on this and let me know what the chances of me actually being able to enlist are.

thank you.

Ali,

You need to go see a recruiter, but getting a drug charge waived is difficult, if not impossible, at this time.

Jolly,

No, if you have ever been diagnosed as alcohol dependent, you are not eligible to enter the nuclear power program - no waivers authorized - per COMNAVCRUITCOMINST 1130.8J, VOLUME II, Chapter 2, Section 9, Exhibit 020903.

Jolly,

Yes, they need all of your hospital and follow-up treatment records, and a psychological consultation is required if you are authorized to continue processing after the medical document review.

For the nuclear power program, prior alcohol dependency is not a condition authorized to receive waiver consideration.

I have no police record at all I was to cautious. They said they need the medical record because it was in a hospital. So I was just wondering what your thoughts were. So my best option if I'm lucky is to get a waiver. They also said maybe a psych eval. I passed my asvab with flying colors I qualify for the nuke program. So if I do get in is there a chance I can get into nuke? Like I said no police involvement except 2 speeding tickets.

Jolly,

If you have been cleared from treatment for a minimum of two years, a waiver is possible, but I will admit, I haven't ever seen one approved because the folks I saw that were forwarded usually had too much police involvement - DUIs and such.
