Navy: It looks like they are coming to an agreement. Educational funding for GI's will be at the higher level. Some or all of the educational benefits will be transferable to family members. Some of the extra lard (money) in the bill that is not associated with an educational bill was eliminated. It looks like McCain is signing on to that agreement and so is the White House, which means the Pentagon is okay with it. At least that is what I saw today.

It basically means that recruits will get the money for a full college education at a 4 year state university going forward.

As far as those folks in San Fran....geez

I think those opposed have articulated their position. McCain is working on an alternate proposal.

Nothing contorted about what I wrote. The GI Bill is a tool that is used for recruiting - I'll stand by waiting for the resounding endorsement for the bill from the City of San Fransisco and the counter-recruiter crowd. Can't wait till they start greeting recruiters and allowing them into the schools without hassle.

The issue in Congress is between a more expensive bill that would roughly fully pay for 4 years in state universities against a bill that would not fully pay for 4 years in state universities, with the former being more expensive.

The non partisan budget office that provides estimates states that the first bill would drive more enlistments, but would also encourage enlistees to leave earlier than the less expensive bill, but that the net impact of # of soldiers staying in the military would be about the same.

As to paying for this stuff, did't some ultra wise person suggest that Adsense income earners would happily pay additional taxes to the tune of 120% of their adsense earnings. :D

You've gone through some pretty contorted reasoning here to try to come up with a negative comment on "liberals." Democrats and liberals support the GI Bill because they (we) think our vets deserve it. It's that simple. The question you should be asking is why Republicans oppose it.
