Sleepless in San Fransisco

GI Bill Draws a Deafening Silence

June 12th, 2008

OK, I am a little confused.

I am all for a new GI Bill that pays for the college tuition of anyone who serves their country honorably for at least 4 years. I admit I have to wonder how we are going to pay for such a plan but am excited about it none the less.

My confusion comes from deafening silence from the liberals who have been yelling from the mountain tops for as long as I can remember, “How dare you use the draw of a college education to draw our young adults into the military!” or words like, “Recruiters focus on the lower class with the draw of a college education.”. Whatever the rhetoric the question is where is it now? Where is the endless stream of anti-recruiting crap from the City of San Fransisco and counter recruiters like Ruth Robertson and others.

Barrack Obama is a co-sponsor of the GI Bill proposed by Senator Web (D) of Virginia - seems to me any loud protest may put dents in the Democrats run for the White House. I assume those against manning our military are having a lot of sleepless nights as this bill is drawing more and more attention. I wouldn’t be surprised if a bill isn’t sent to the President before the end of the summer with at least a marked increase in college benefits for those who served since 9/11.

Where is all their screaming and rhetoric? Guess it was just their politics and not some deep convictions they held… Figures.

  • You’ve gone through some pretty contorted reasoning here to try to come up with a negative comment on “liberals.” Democrats and liberals support the GI Bill because they (we) think our vets deserve it. It’s that simple. The question you should be asking is why Republicans oppose it.

  • The issue in Congress is between a more expensive bill that would roughly fully pay for 4 years in state universities against a bill that would not fully pay for 4 years in state universities, with the former being more expensive.

The non partisan budget office that provides estimates states that the first bill would drive more enlistments, but would also encourage enlistees to leave earlier than the less expensive bill, but that the net impact of # of soldiers staying in the military would be about the same.

As to paying for this stuff, did’t some ultra wise person suggest that Adsense income earners would happily pay additional taxes to the tune of 120% of their adsense earnings. :D

  • I think those opposed have articulated their position. McCain is working on an alternate proposal.

Nothing contorted about what I wrote. The GI Bill is a tool that is used for recruiting - I’ll stand by waiting for the resounding endorsement for the bill from the City of San Fransisco and the counter-recruiter crowd. Can’t wait till they start greeting recruiters and allowing them into the schools without hassle.

  • Navy: It looks like they are coming to an agreement. Educational funding for GI’s will be at the higher level. Some or all of the educational benefits will be transferable to family members. Some of the extra lard (money) in the bill that is not associated with an educational bill was eliminated. It looks like McCain is signing on to that agreement and so is the White House, which means the Pentagon is okay with it. At least that is what I saw today.

It basically means that recruits will get the money for a full college education at a 4 year state university going forward.

As far as those folks in San Fran….geez
