Donna, the author of DazzlinDonna, wrote a recent post called, “The Essence of You” which tasks you with trying to answer, “Who do I want to be?”.
Before you can determine the path it really does make sense to answer Donna’s first question of, “Who are you?”. It really should be the starting point of any self improvement endeavor – having a pretty good understanding on where you stand on life’s big stage is important.
Are we even fully qualified to answer the question of who we are? I’d say no if you are not assessing input from all your available sources. If the choice of who we were was totally up to the individual then all we would have to do is think it and POOF – Your it!
Let us venture out just a bit further and deeper than that.
Keep in mind, we are ultimately defined by what we do with the things we can control and how we react to the things we cannot. Analyzing the input of feedback of other members of the human race is essential. I don’t mean sent out a questionnaire and I don’t mean you should ask each person to fill out a critique sheet after the encounter. I am talking about the verbal and non-verbal cues people give when interactions occur. It could be your boss telling you your doing a great job or a client rolling their eyes – point is we all receive enormous amounts of useful FREE information for self assessment.
Whether or not others will agree with your stance on who you are is information you should seek out so your personal reflection on the subject can be tempered with at least some reality.
Pride is a feeling of personal worth and self respect that comes from successfully striving for and eventually meeting short, medium and long term goals you have determined important. Goals in this context are tasks as I describe in the article, Human Leadership.
So basically who you are is the sum total of your self pride tempered with the feedback of others.
Once you have figured out who you are lets try and figure out where you want to go next. Your new destination will be tangible, something you can touch, smell, feel, hear which will ultimately produce a desired intangible such as different potentially more powerful emotions in self and/or others.
Remember, money is not a motivator, the motivator is the emotion money can buy.
Don’t just dream it, make it happen. Dreams are essentially goals without deadlines. Devise achievable, quality goals and tasks and just like with any new destination you will be traveling to write down the directions!
You are in the drivers seat. You control the wheel, brake and acceleration of your “You”. As a leader the most challenging subordinate you have is yourself. Take responsibility for your actions and hold yourself accountable, it takes “Personal Responsibility In Daily Efforts” to have pride.
May you have a joyous and fulfilling journey, drive safe!
